Wavemakers Code of Conduct

Wavemakers Core Values

Celebrate diversity  - We believe that diverse cultures, abilities, identities and experiences strengthen us.

Inclusivity - We honour representation and personal experiences. We learn, explore and challenge our own biases, assumptions and beliefs.

Belonging - We can all bring our whole selves to the table. Belonging is different from inclusivity, it is a feeling and energy that can be created by accepting one another, honouring experiences, and highlighting respect in interactions, even in a virtual space.

Safety - We emphasize creating a safe learning environment for one another.  We treat each other with dignity, respect, and care.  We do not tolerate abuse in any form.

Brave the unknown - We believe breaking down barriers requires courage, hard work, and resilience. And it’s worth it!

Build new partnerships - We believe new possibilities are around the order if we’re open to different ideas, connections and relationships.

Make more waves - We believe in preparing the next generation to lead and transform work for all Canadians.

Norms and Behaviours

We are respectful and we expect respect

Respect for ourselves and our other people is important in all relationships, and it’s no different when we’re in a virtual world.

We treat online friends with as much respect as face-to-face friends

We are never patronizing or disrespectful.

We collaborate

We work together towards common goals: learning, growth and connection.

When we work together we  are mindful to involve  all team members in brainstorms, thinking sessions and planning documents.

We share ideas with one another, ask questions, and ask for feedback.

We are curious

We ask great questions.

We seek out different perspectives.

We listen to learn.

We are generous in both giving and accepting feedback.

We know that constructive feedback is an important part of growth, learning and development. It’s how we build on our capabilities.

Feedback also requires respect and understanding. We understand that good feedback is kind, respectful, clear, and constructive.

When we give feedback it is focused on goals and values and not personal preferences.

We are considerate.

We are  respectful in all our actions and interactions.

Being considerate means that we show up for our team, our mentors, and the community. We respect each other’s time.

We disagree constructively

Diversity is our strength.

We value our varied Wavemakers community and the wide range of backgrounds and perspectives on issues.

We know that disagreement does not mean disrespect.

When disagreements happen we resolve them in a constructive way - on our own or with the support of the wavemakers community.

We believe in dialogue, and in seeking out areas of agreement.

We are committed to building a safe and respectful community

We want all wavemakers to feel welcome and included in our community. Nobody should ever feel excluded based on their:

  • Race

  • Gender, gender identity, or gender expression

  • Age

  • Sexual orientation

  • Religion

  • Disability or medical condition

We choose our words carefully: we do not post anything that would be deemed as vulgar or offensive.  We have a zero-tolerance policy on bullying, harassment or the use or promotion of hate speech

Should a member of the community break the Code of Conduct, we will take action. In severe cases, we will immediately – and permanently – remove the member from our community.

Let us know

We want to make sure our community is a safe and inclusive space. And we need your help! If you see  or experience any behaviour that violates our Norms of Behaviour, please let us know. Get in touch with one of our admin team: support@wavemakers.network

This code of conduct applies to all Wavemaker’s spaces, including public channels, private channels and direct messages, both online and off. Anyone who violates this code of conduct may be sanctioned or expelled from these spaces at the discretion of the administrators.

Toward a Welcoming and Safe Environment

We hope to create an environment in which diverse individuals can collaborate and interact in a positive and affirming way. Examples of behavior that contributes to creating this sort of environment include:

  • Using welcoming and inclusive language

  • Being respectful of differing viewpoints and experiences

  • Gracefully accepting constructive criticism

  • Focusing on what is best for the overall community

  • Showing empathy towards other community members

Anti-Harassment Statement

This community will not tolerate harassment of any kind. Examples of harassment include:

This includes anti-Indigenous and anti-Blackness.

  • Unwelcome comments regarding a person's lifestyle choices and practices, including those related to food, health, parenting, relationships, drugs, and employment.

  • Deliberate misgendering, using inappropriate pronouns, or use of "dead" or rejected names.

  • Sexual images or behavior.

  • Physical contact or simulated physical contact (eg, textual descriptions like "hug" or "backrub") without consent or after a request to stop.

  • Threats of violence.

  • Incitement of violence towards any individual or group, including encouraging a person to commit suicide or to engage in self-harm.

  • Deliberate intimidation.

  • Stalking or following - online or in the physical world.

  • Harassing photography or recording, including logging online activity for harassment purposes.

  • Sustained disruption of discussion.

  • Unwelcome sexual attention.

  • Patterns of inappropriate social contact, such as requesting/assuming inappropriate levels of intimacy with others.

  • Continued one-on-one communication after requests to cease.

  • Deliberate "outing" of any aspect of a person's identity without their consent except as necessary to protect vulnerable people from intentional abuse.

  • Publication of non-harassing private communication.

If you have questions or concerns about these issues please contact support@wavemakers.network.

Reporting

If you are being harassed by a member of the Wavemakers community, notice that someone else is being harassed, or have any other concerns, please contact support@wavemakers.network. If the person who is harassing you is on the admin team, they will not be involved in handling or resolving the incident.

The admin team will respond to any complaint within 24 hours on weekdays and 48 hours on weekends and holidays.

This code of conduct applies to Wavemaker’s community's spaces, but if you are being harassed by a member of our community outside our spaces, we still want to know about it. We will take all good-faith reports of harassment seriously. This includes harassment outside our spaces and harassment that took place at any point in time. The Wavemakers team reserves the right to exclude people from the community based on their past behavior, including behavior outside of our spaces and behavior towards people who are not in this community.

We reserve the right to reject any report we believe to have been made in bad faith. Reports intended to silence legitimate criticism may be deleted without response.

Enforcement Process

Every code of conduct violation report will be treated with seriousness and care. If a member's immediate safety and security is threatened, a Wavemaker team member may take any action that they deem appropriate, up to and including temporarily banning the offender from the community. In less urgent situations, at least two admins will discuss the offense and mutually arrive at a suitable response, which will be shared with the offender privately. Whatever the resolution that they decide upon, the decision of the admins involved in a violation case will be considered final.

We will respect confidentiality requests for the purpose of protecting victims of abuse. At our discretion, we may publicly name a person about whom we've received harassment complaints, or privately warn third parties about them, if we believe that doing so will increase the safety of Wavemaker community members or the general public. We will not name harassment victims without their affirmative consent.

Consequences

Participants asked to stop any harassing behavior are expected to comply immediately. If a participant engages in harassing behavior, the administrators may take any action they deem appropriate, up to and including expulsion from the community and identification of the participant as a harasser to other members. At the discretion of the admins, or by request, one or more of the parties involved may request to discuss the violation and how to avoid similar situations in the future.
