Wavemakers at Tech Fest 2023: The Future of Work in Action

Curiosity. Connection. Collaboration. Innovative Technology. Wavemakers believes that these four components make up the recipe for building strong relationships and developing the skills necessary to succeed in the future of work.

We saw that future in action on Feb. 7 at Tech Fest, hosted by the Hunter Hub for Entrepreneurial Thinking at the University of Calgary, which brought together more than 1,000 students from post-secondary institutions across Alberta.

Curiosity

We had the opportunity to connect with so many students at our Wavemakers booth. Their curiosity, energy and passion for exploring new technologies was invigorating. We were also grateful to the amazing Wavemakers program alum who volunteered to spend the day sharing their experiences and answering questions. A key part of the Wavemakers program is joining and helping build a supportive community to build strong connections and support each other to use their talents to make a lasting impact on the world around them.

Connection

We were so inspired by the diverse network helping to connect students to meaningful career experiences in an exciting and growing field. It was an honour for Wavemakers to be among so many fantastic and impactful organizations and companies, including Calgary Economic Development, the Canadian Food Innovation Network and Alberta Innovates.

Collaboration

Events like Tech Fest are so crucial because they help create the ecosystems necessary for Canada’s tech sector to continue to grow and flourish – and students are a key component of the future of those ecosystems. Each one of us has a role to play in fostering collaboration and connections, and to encourage Canada’s students to put their talent to work in the field of tech.

By creating these spaces, together we can encourage more students – and more students from diverse backgrounds and perspectives – to embrace tech as a field of study and work. At Wavemakers, we want to continue to play our role in that ecosystem by giving students accessible and inclusive work-integrated learning opportunities to set them up for success in the future of work.

How are tech opportunities changing the future of work for students about to graduate? Wavemarkers would love to hear how and see how we can collaborate.
